Power loss. Vacuum in fuel system?

Postby SmokeyMagician » Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:41 pm

Hi, didn't know what else to put really.

I have a mk3 transit county with a 2.5 tdi engine fitted. (unsure of year of engine 1990-2000?)
It started losing power gradually at first, just a slight hesitation every now and then that progressively got worse in each gear until it would just be able to accelerate in first but would lack the power to accelerate in 2nd.
If you stopped, the engine would labour for a few seconds then pick up again and rev freely. However if you pulled away it would start loosing power again very quickly.
I assumed it was a fuel blockage so checked all the fuel lines and replaced the filter, bled the system etc.
While i was trying to do this I noticed a great deal of resistance in the hand pump that sits atop the fuel filter, it would only pump a few times before locking up. With the engine running and revving the hand pump is sucked down hard, obviously there is a vacuum being created inside the system. But where I do not know!
I have checked all the breather pipes on the fuel tank which are fine and if you disconnect the fuel pipe from the filter to the fuel injection pump you can pump fuel freely with the hand pump and there is no resistance.
I used to have a similar problem on a mercedes estate that would be cured if you removed the fuel cap. There would be a great WHOOOOSh of air being sucked in then it would be fine.

Kind of run out of ideas now, any help would be greatly appreciated!

It was originally a petrol van.
It's a Lucas/CAV injection pump.
I'll get some pictures up too.

Errr? No pretty sure I mean Lucas/CAV.
Throttle cable is mechanically connected to the top of the injection pump which it wouldn't be if it was EPIC.

Just clarifying, as I've never seen a Lucas CAV Turbo Di yet :D

As it's a conversion, I'd start with removing the the pick up filter in the tank, as it's known to be a problem when converting from petrol to diesel :)

Hey I amy be wrong, but that definitely ties in with the manual.
With regard to the pick up filter, would that suddenly of become a problem because its been fine for thousands of miles?
And i guess it would be tank out to remove?

Interesting manual :!:
Any chance of a scan of this CAV with turbo engine :?:

The filter is more likely to be a problem when the weather is as cold as it is :!:
And yes, it's a tank out/down job :!:

 Try a search and find more first hand details on this filter removal :)
