This is the result of someone in my very old white swb that was doing 70mph and the belt snapped and then they tried tow starting it around the block...valve bits embeded in the pistons and head...But my old black beasty van was bought with a snapped belt and that ran ok after doing just the belt and straightning the push rods in a vice...I have also done the same to another transit at the side of the road as well..

 nice mess that, never had one do more than bent push rods and crack the rocker arms.

Perhaps the valve failed causing the belt to snap ?

Well, if you did a bit of searching on here first, you'd know that you wouldn't have to remove the head :!:

I'm not sure if it's too late at this stage to simply put back the bolts back you've already removed :| That's up to you :!:

I'd have removed the rocker assembly, pin locked the engine, then drop in the new push rods, fit the rocker assy back on and continued to fit the cam belt and tensioner :)
Lastly check all the tappet clearances and you're virtually home :D

I have the same problem with my pushrods,I have taken off rocker after cambelt broke and push rods all bent,I don't think there was any further damage as I was only going slow round a roundabout at the time.
I have been told that after fitting the New cam belt which I have done and then to place in the new push rods but to set the tappets I have to: to put the pin back in the crankshaft,I know where the pin is for the crankshaft and at the same time to get the /piston/pistons to TDC.I have seen the previous posting sent to me but means knothing to my understanding.
Can anyone explain further.

Hi All.

After fitting new Cam belt that snapped and then finding the pushrods on my Transit 1996 have bent, now I am upto the stage after fitting new belt and have placed in the new rods how do you set the tappets as someone has mentioned about the piston/pistons being at TDC at the same time as fitting the pin again on the crankshaft before setting up tappets. As the last guy said I don't want to go to all this effort and it goes bang again.
Also I think my van has had the same water pump since new as its never been changed since I have owned it myself in 12 yrs,It hasn't caused me a problem but do you think I should take the cover off again and fit a new one while doing this job..if so is it a straight out and in job?

Can anyone advance on the order of setting up to finish job and explain what I need to do ref the setting of Tappets and the TDC thing. :(

Hello Wilks,,I bought a HAYNES MANUAL before anything happened to me. OK, the belt snapped and the rods got kettled but as most of the guys on here say..its unlikely that any valves have been damaged. I just finished taking the head off to make sure mine were not knackered....all ok. Also it gave me a chance to have a major clean up. Once the new head gasket set and push rods arrive all should be tickety boo.! As for correct timing that seems straight forward enough with the correct pins in place locking the pump, crank and camshaft.
I,m sure theres plenty of bodies on here that will also reply..best of luck.!

Just a quick note to what i, m doing. I took the head off with the inlet manifold half still in place. I was surprised at the amount of crap built up in there. This was the same at the other half so i gave them a good wash out with petrol iusing a bottle scrubber brush, clean rags to dry and they sure look a lot better. I, m wondering if there is a reason for this build up or is this normal to these engines.? Never had a problem with transit in the past so this is a new avenue for me ... but interesting.

heres how i do it
dont fit rocker shaft ,
peg fly wheel at timing hole so pistons are in right place , set cam wheel to timing mark and pin set pump to timing mark and pin , this is when you should fit belt and then release tensioner and retighten

then fit rocker shaft and seat rockers into pushrods

use procedure in andys post for order to set up rockers

this way theres no way for valves to make contact with pistons
