Mk6 Re-paint, Rustoleum.

i have been posting my progress up on Scottish-Vanners. i thought i would copy my posts from it onto here...

i apologise for any random comments in amongst this thread, its copied directly so there are some questions answered in amongst it.

firstly today, i stripped off the sign writting, and yellow reflective stripe. i tried everything from a heat gun, boiling water, cold water everything, but nothing worked properly and spent ages getting the glue off, luckily the sign writing wasnt as bad as reflective tape, it was vynal and not long on so came off easier. a good 2-3 hours anyway. then i removed the bullbars and sun visor which didnt take long. i will be taking the lights off next time i have an hour or so. decided to do a test panel of the paint, so the inside rear door got it, that square panel where the window should be, i rolled one and sprayed the other.
because its dark now and i had other stuff to do, i dont yet have photos but i will take them tomorrow and post asap.
i mixed up a bit too much paint for test panel so i took the wheels off and painted behind wheels to use it up, as i havent really prepped bodywork yet.

next job is to remove as much extra lights as possible, roof ones and airhorns. bought new lights to go on roof, but i think im going to get a bar made up set them on.

after all the dismantling is done, there is some filling to do, have a few chips and nicks but a bugger of a dent in the back door to do something about, reverse into a trailer coupling!

just a regular paint job but i will be doing it with the infamous Rustoleum so i will be taking pictures along the way. it wont be painted for a few weekends though as i have a long weekend in a fortnight



got a couple of questions though, first is, does anyone have mirror covers for a mk6, anyone with chrome mirror covers have their old ones?
second question, once its painted, as its going from white and red (as written on registration docs) to black will i need to change the docs,and will i need to inform insurance?

first load of pics dont show much, just some of the van with bits off it. and the test panel of paint, it looks bumpier on the pictures than it is. I did both inside rear doors, one i sanded down before painting, the other i didnt, and i rolled one door and sprayed the other. they both look the same to the eye but im going to spray the van for even finish. the photos are just one paint no sanding after etc.







so as you can see, after one coat of paint, its shiney, but needing a good sand to smooth it out by the looks of it!
never got anything done tonight cause i was knackered off on friday and sunday so more progress after that hopefully.

im still worried that black will show up all the wee inperfections, but with the black sunvisor and black bull bars hoping it will make it look 'different'

not seen many black mk6s around here either... except the morgues

that paints been dry about 2 days now, but didnt want to waste wet and dry paper on the test panel, the vans sanded to feck now so its getting painted regardless

i was almost going for yellow, but no matter what shade of yellow you get, it will look like an AA van, same with Orange and RAC.

im spraying my van with Rustoleum, bought the paint in 2.5L tubs, thinning it down and using a compressor, although the finishes are almost identical after one coat. i think buying aerosols will take ages, and i somehow have it in my head buying 100 tins might lead to different shades, where i can mix from a big tub.

anyway, since last update i have done some filling, using 2part filler i got from Autosave Components. it looks pretty bad on photos, but i will build up layers and sand smooth obviously. not much more to be said because struggled with weather.

rear door, had a dent above handle when i bought it, and a big dent where i reversed into trailer hitch that was too high. and you can see some bits everywhere i used the rest of filler on. it looks like a dent on left door but its just reflection.



behind the SLD there was a small hole, i was told to cut it out and patch it, but that seemed too hard for me i cut out rust that was 'loose' treated it with stuff i got from another motor factors, and filled over.



i removed badges for painting, and decided to fill over badge, just because i decided to at the time!
this one needs loads of coats of filler cause it was so deep.



im on backshift this week, so i might start painting this week and leave sitting for the rest of day while im at work, sand down the following day, depending on how things go, i have a long weekend soon but im hoping to use that weekend for finishing it.

bought new mirror covers off ebay, i had put indicators on my mirrors, but some D*** smashed mine when i was parked so bought 2 new ones from ebay, £10each.

new lights for roof bought the other day too, just the 6inch Ring ones i had on before, but they had been painted white so they are going on my brothers van as work lamps on rear.

im glad you said that, i am having a problem smoothing it down without making it obvious that there is a filled section. on another note, i was the same as you with regards to starting it, i decided to spend money on paint so had to do the van to merit spending money!

there is a yellow van on FTF with black roof, bad boy bonnet etc, looks good but like i said, no matter what there will always be comments, i always get "a-team" comments and thats before van is black.

cool, ill see how it goes now cause i think i might only need one more screed then itll be fine, then its sanding all the way, this might be a silly question, but ive been using good old elbow grease just now, will a power sander be too much or just the job for sanding the filler down, was too worried that it was rattle it all away so been sanding by hand.

well i was up at the crack of dawn this morning, finished some prep work and started to the taping off of the van with masking tape and an old newspaper. one quick sand and it was brushed and hosed down to start paint. Never got any photos of it taped up, not much to see but i think i went OTT with taping, just to make sure.

i mixed all the paint i had with thinners in a big tub, so its all the same shade, not sure if thats the right thing to do or not, but thats what i done, in the compressor it went and me and my brother started. neither have done any painting before but we set to it and this is the results...

we had 5litres (2x2.5L tins) overall and added in half a litre of thinners as per advice, we are left with 2.5L of paint. so enough for another coat. It is on pretty thick but i wouldve liked more coats than im going to get.
thats all thats to report this time, tomorrow is all about sanding the runs of paint out

there are bugs on it, so not sure how im going to manage to get it finished without them! I will have to sand the lot down anyway for a second coat... wont i?

after reading up loads on Rustoleum i have seen many people say never dry sand it, it just cloggs up paper and leaves it horrible, one guy suggested to hold a hose with left hand and sand like buggery with the other, drench it.
i have a test panel on inside door to try it, i will have to buy more paint to do inside doors, but i think ill just get cheap shite from some local places as its less important.

been out sanding today, hope it pays off becuase its looking flat now its been done! i havent painted the mirrors or any plastic bits, i was unsure whether to paint mirror covers like i did previously.

i can always do them after i suppose.

ive already had a-team comments, but i had them before i painted so not really bothered, most are tongue in cheek but the few cheeky barstewards that mean it simply get told "just as well its not your van" and a big cheesy smile.

good job there Stu, Not sure how you only got one coat out of a 2.5l tin, I managed 3? Still it will hold the rust back a while

i was wondering that, because i searched here and i think i read someone with a yellow and black van used about 6litres and got a good few coats.

there will be progress reports as soon as i do some.

It's looking good in that colour. All these progress reports are really tempting me to paint mine!

First time i have heard of rustoleum being used on a mk6, i expect it will be more common as the mk6's start to rust
