What do Transit numbers mean?

Hi all,

I've searched for this but couldn't find an answer. I had a feeling that (eg) Transit 80, Transit 90, Transit 150 etc etc was to do with the bodywork/ use. Someone has suggested it is to do with horsepower. Is this correct?. Or perhaps more to do with the power transmitted through the diff?

Load capacity, 80 = 800kgs 100 = 1000kgs. Approximate.

Aha, so nothing to do with power transmitted then! Thought as much, but the bloke I was talking to was quite convincing.

So, I take it, the more bodywork the less the overall payload and therefore the less the number (i.e 100, 90, 80 etc). Is that correct? I was more than confused as to how a simple 2.5 D.I. engine could develope such different horsepower unless it was something to do with the diff ratio (or tyre size?).

Please correct me if "as I take it" I've taken wrong!

It's got nothing to do with the body work, it's more the suspension and brakes.

The 2.5di is available in various outputs. 70 and 76ps and the turbo 85, 100 and 115ps on the Mk5 vans.

Your MK4 150 probably has an 80ps Banana Engine
