Right were do i start i bought this van a couple of months ago it was being used as a scrap van. The back had no ply lining so you can imagine the state it was in all the sides were dented really bad i have got almost all the dents out and filled what was left and sanded the temp primed to just stop it going rusty. Im busy working so only have 1 day a week off so progress is slow i forgot to take some pictures before i started but here are some were im upto at the minute.

This side is not that bad apart from just by the rear wheel arch i didnt notice anything until i sanded a little bit of rust off the arch and noticed it had filler about an inch thick to fill a dent so i used my slide hammer to get most of the dent out and now just have a tiny bit of filler on there.

This wing badly mangled so have a wing from a van my mate was splitting ready to go also the grill part under the lights is cracked i dont know wether to try and fix it or buy a nother panel.
Image

This side is by far the worst took me 3 full days just knocking dents out and filling and sanding then filling and sanding again. When i was sanding this bit i noticed a small crack in the paint on the bottom of the side loading door so sanded it a little bit to reveal another tonne of filler i havent managed to get around to this bit yet but im thinking it might be easy to just get another door saves all the hassle but im in 2 minds about this so will decide next week.

Rear doors not that bad just a couple of dents sort of filled but not finished.

Next the roof it was very badly dented so with my panel beating tools i bought off ebay i set off knocking them out this is just the first go at them i will get it better than that then fill whats left.

Thanks for reading :)

Mate get some paint on top of that primer or the rust will be back through in a matter of weeks.
Primer will not stop it rusting at all and dont belive anyone who says it will. Think of primer like a sponge it is very porous
Get some cheap top coat on there to act as a sealer then when you rub it back down you can use it as a guide coat
this will help you see your high spots and low spots.

Good luck Nige69

Thanks for the replys guys hopefully the van will be ready next week sometime for paint now im looking for a decent spray painter close to liverpool i dont mind travelling a bit if im getting the right job.

What sort of prices do you think i would be looking at all of the prep work will be done well i say done but it will be my best i can do it might need a little bit of tweaking etc.

Does the whole van have to be primed first before the top coat or is it just the bits i have repaired get primed? i thought the whole van got primed but someone has since informed me if im putting it back the same colour which i am only the repairs will need priming is this true?

Thanks

Kev.

Hi there , your van will not need priming all over , it will need sanding all over and just need spot priming over the repairs and any areas were he has broken through. Then the primed area will be sanded. I would put colour on the primed bits first then probably one light coat all over followed by a full coat.
If the paintwork inside the doorshuts is ok ask your painter to mask those areas out it may save on cost.
Dont know much about price as i only paint for a company and dont do pricing but you could probably look at about thirty to forty pound a litre for colour plus hardener and thinners. I rekon three litres should do it.
Be warned if you take your van to a painter and say you have prepaired it he will probably take your word for it , thus meaning any imperfections will be blamed on your prep work. They may also not warranty there work either if you have preped yourself.

Hope this helps a little , would paint it for you if i was closer.

I paid £120 for paint and materials

He charged £400 labour which was a real bargain considering he had it almost 1 week and hat included going over all my bad work :(
