Starting issue, ecu???

Postby pete_g111 » Sun Oct 03, 2010 12:51 am

Ok, so I have a 1996 turbo diesel MK5 transit with lucas epic fuel pump. & like many, it has been having some issues starting. would just get a click from the shut off solenoid when I tried to start it. occasionally it would fire.
Traced the problem to the shut off solenoid, replaced the valve and there you go, it started and stopped beautifully. however the enging management light stayed on for 3 or 4 seconds after it started which i have heard means that a fault has been logged???

But now after a few days its been getting worse and worse to the point now where it wont start at all.
I'm almost certain its an ecu fault which is stopping the engine from starting.
Can I do something to reset the ecu, something with immobiliser, i dont know? Ive heard loads of things like disconnecting the battery etc. don't know how true or reliable these things are?

Thanks!!!

Does it turn over? But not fire? Or does it do nothing? What does the immobiliser light do?

it doesnt turn over. when the starter motor actually goes, it starts no worries. just as if the ecu wont engange the starter

Pats light is on head cloth on Pre97, and on dash board on post 97 (Red Led in black surround), but I reckon it could be starter relay

It would appear that you dont have a Pats led, so I doubt if you have an immobiliser, the relay you show is, I believe the ignition relay, on a pats equipped van the starter relay is behind the dash on the passenger side (you can see it after removing the dash top cubby hole)

Probably to remind you to take the face off the stereo, Is it a Sony stereo :?:
Next time it wont start, test for voltage on the starter switch wire
