Postby shadow48 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 12:50 pm

Hi , have an L reg 1993 auto transit that has been in my local garage for 4 weeks now. Its had new plugs, leads and dizzi bits, but it cuts out when cold after starting. The emmisions are high and its burning rich , any ideas why? the garage recken the emmisions are between 7 & 8 when they should be 2.5 or so. The garage have no clue !:(

Yet another knackered VV carb by the sound of it!

By the way, change your garage cos if they cant fix an old ford petrol motor they need F***ng!

W carb? thought the engine was injection? As for the garage they are Bristol St motors in Birmingham - a main ford dealer. They are a joke , but if you know of a good local garage that would be great. They've sorted the cutting out problem without the need for parts so makes me wonder why did it take 5 weeks. The van was with them so long the mot ran out. I'm waiting for a hand brake assembly now but that could be another long wait. :(

V V carb, No i think yours will be using a carb rather than injectors. Dont think injectors were used until the smiley front came out. Bristol street need a kick up the arse for what they have done, well for what they haven't done lol.

i know someone who works in that garage and even they admit they havent a clue on older vehicles as all the mechanics are youngish and if it hasnt a diagnoistic socket they havent a clue...handbrake mech would be better off getting a secondhand one and get it fitted by another garage or yourself as its pretty easy to fit one.

You'll have the MK3 Massive after you soon
You have to look around for a older mechanics who worked on this type of stuff way back when... Go to my Ford dealer and the oldest Vehicle Technician is 25... All the older ones are in management or got out when the going was good

Maybe the OP can confirm which system he has, and I agree with Rover that if it's a Pinto with injection, then cleaning or replacing the ISCV should sort the idling issues, but I've also had issues with plug leads breaking down with the heat from the exhaust manifold  :D
