mine is a 2000 2.5 di but as far as i know it doesn't have glowplugs...

its direct injection..only indirect injection needs glow plugs to start up....only early mk/3 Di and export mk5 have a Flame start plug as a option when in very cold climates

When my mate did the service a couple of weeks back, he mentioned something in passing about keeping the diesel he'd drained out of the old fuel filter. I asked him why and he said because it would be warm for filling up the new filter. I asked what he meant and he showed me a yellow fitting on the bottom of the fuel filter - he said "this warms the diesel as it passes through the filter"

Didnt think to ask him whether it had glow plugs or whether this warming element was all that my van has????

Close but not quite. They were also fitted as a rather rare option to UK spec vehicles. Fastmower has one on his county and I have seen 1 or 2 others on the forum with them fitted. It is possible to retrofit a flame start (someone on here has done it) but I don't know how difficult it is.

the yellow thing is not a diesel heater - its a water if fuel sensor

mk5 baby,i wasn't being sarcastic,just explaining how i start my mk 5 up.Apolgies if you thought otherwise,i'm still a diesel
virgin,all i know is mine doesn't have glow plugs and the problems i seem to encounter are mainly not enough starting power
in my battery or fan belt not charging my baterry properly,but i will say this,i am learning and hope we can learn from each other,and in no way would i wish you get stranded on a Motorway as i know what that is like,come on fella let's learn from each other,isn't that what forums are for?

yeah i retro fitted a flamestart...quite easy,i did a thread last year.saves battery and starter motor .

hi mate nah no glow plugs , sadly , its direct injection , keep over quarter of tank of fuel in her and this makes starting better but no way garaunteed , its all worth it though cause its a transit !! :mrgreen:
