Rear wheels - how wide?

Postby familybanger » Sat Dec 04, 2010 7:44 pm

So... I haz a swb mk5 with slidey side door which I would still like to open when I get the wheels banded. What's the max wide you can get away with?

I figure you can space out the runner for the door gaining more clearance yes?

Thought some of you may have been here before and have some usefull info :)

Oh yeah, I'm tighter than a ducks arse so will be keeping the same tyres which are 205 something 14's and am thinking 2 inch on the front and 3 on the back of the satandard steels.

Cheers

cant be far out best way is to measure the gap - but remember once you fit the tyres to wider rims they wont 'balloon' out as much :D - my wellers just catch the sliding door but if it want there you could go wider - i'm one day gonna make a modded hanger which pushes he door out further :D

I had a look today and reckon I'll get away with a staggered 2 -3 inch band although I need to find my meassuring stick to be sure.

Like you say the door can be modded so I guess getting it looking as I want it is all that matters

Hve a proper look with a ruler today and it seems that 2.5 on the rear and 2 on the front will be about right. Should give me 8.5 rears and 8 fronts :D

WOW! 8.5" seems a lot for a MK5, although your gonna pack out the door 8) Its gonna look good. Im going to have the same guy do mine too, but my last quote was a couple of years back and I didnt have a couple of spare rims at the time. Must get them done soon.

8.5 may poke a little though with the tyres a tad streched I thing I may just get away with it
Failing that the arches (as ever  ) will need some attention soon so they can be flaired a little to suit if need be.
As for the side door, it is of novelty use on this new van as my last mk5 had the door held tight with a rachet strap. I'm fairly confident it will be ok and if the runner needs packing then so be it.

Jamesp is has a very good rep with banding steels so I've no worries on that front. I've never seen a bad word written about the wheels from him plus he seems a really nice bloke to deal with.
I can recall a pic of a big time dented stock car rim running a crazy amount of dish and the only damage was to the outer edge with no cracking on the weld at all.

Only thing is what colour to paint them?
