mk1 non bullnose diesel conversion,...if it works!!

Postby oldskooler » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:01 pm

after taking a lot of inspiration from my trip to malta last year i started looking into relatively modern diesel transplants for oldskool fords.

im just starting a resto on my mk2 escort van and thought this would be the ideal base for such a conversion. so after a lot of research i arrived at the 1.7 td izuzu engine as used in vauxhall astras and cavaliers in the 90s. mostly because these lumps are renowned for theyre reliability and good mpg. along with this they were restriced to 80 bhp when supplied to vauxhall so can be tuned easily for more output. and after measuring i found the engine to be 3 inches shorter than a pinto!! and roughly the same weight. but best of all they were made to fit the vauxhall box, so, a vauxhall to type 9 bellhousing used for fitting xe engines, and the rwd drivetrain is sorted!!

it wont be the simplest conversion ever in the mk2 van but will be cool if it works out i reckon!!

it was while sizing up this setup that i thought it may be a runner in a mk1 tranny flat front as pintos have been squeezed into them before.

so after sharing my thoughts with my mate who owns this sweet swb mk1 complete with very tired v4!!! he was more than keen to see if it would work out!!

after curiousity getting the better of me for the last while i decided to pull in a mk1 cab i got for breaking to mock it all up!!

Image

first i just dangled the engine itself in there to see how it shaped up. first impressions were good!

Image

so using the bellhousing i coupled up a tranny type 9.....i know a lot will question this, could always make up a plate to mate up an mt75 if it came to it!!

Image

engine and box in place more or less in correct position.

Image

i just bent up the hanger tabs for the mk1 box for clearance ( the beauty of using scrap van for mock up!!) the gearlever also lines up with hole, would look original inside using type 9.

Image

Image

oil filter fouls a little on drivers side but could get round this handy enough id say.

Image

the most impressive part is the clearance up front when the front panel is in place.

even a mk5 di rad fits comfortably with room for a slimline fan on front id say!

Image

like the escort van, one of the biggest hurdles will be the cooling system, the thermostat housing and mass of pipes on the back of the head will be a pain to deal with but not impossible i hope!!! :!: :D

i figure if i can get it to work out in the escort van, the tranny ill be a lot simpler, for a start the sump shouldnt need touching as there should be plenty of clearance from the axle etc.

i couldnt see this conversion being "man" enough in a twin wheel fire tender for example, but should be pretty sweet in a swb,.....and a nice bit quieter than a DI.

it may be worth a shot i reckon!! :D

shame :( thats what would put me off doing this to mine but 80BHP is still 10 more than a Di

Proper good engines those Izuzu's :D Strong as an Ox :!:

I don't see why it wouldn't be great in a twin wheel Fire Van, so long as you don't go mad with the diff ratio it would pull along nicely 8) Also a LOT quieter than a Di, smoother too, very little turbo lag (prob cos it's quite small), just fitting a slightly larger turbo with a half decent intercooler will see 95bhp, if you can find uprated injectors then add another 10-15 :D

another great thing is, they are readily available and pretty cheap too! :!: 8)

i would like to say a big thankyou for your time in checking this out   its allways nice to see other engines that will go in ,and 80bhp with the tourque of the diesel should pull along a twin wheeler better than the 65ps v4 petrol engine  as you say if you could keep the diff to about 5.14 and 5 speed i think it would go along no difrent (probly better than a n/a di engine!
also the big bonus is the weight ,the di makes mk1,s very very heavy on the steering as this would make much difrence than a v4 i dont think!
so well done mate and keep us posted about if you go ahead with it in the mk1

My old "L" reg cavvy had the same engine, it was an ex taxi and had 384,000 miles when I scrapped it. And NO I didnt scrap it because the engine was knackered, that ran like it had less than 100,000 miles on it! It was well rotten.  They have next to no turbo lag and feel very tourquey. :D

this reminds me i was telling my mate whos got the mk1 astra about this :D he has the 1.5(i think) version in his astra but he reckons you could get 120bhp out of one (the 1.7 not the 1.5) :D ............ mabe this is the engine for my firevan after all

Great choice of engine my bro had a mk3 astra with the same type of engine and it would sit at 80 quite happily

well ive got the mk2 escort van up and running and im impressed so far, got a few things to iron out but overall id say it could be a good conversion. it pulls pretty well even though im just running the restrictive standard exhaust system that was on the 1.1 lump in the van for the moment!!!

im gonna drive it for a couple of weeks before dismantling to tackle the bodywork, will be starting the mk1 tranny conversion in a few weeks all going well! 8)

Looks well will be a nice change to see under the bonnet and that engine means cheap servicing and running costs too...
