My Mk6 money maker (56k beware)

Postby yorkshire.transit » Sat Feb 11, 2012 1:58 pm

Hi all,
I've been on this site a while now, and read through plenty of progress builds and thought its about time i got some pics of mine up and the progress to come.

A bit of info;

Its a FWD MWB medium room 75ps transit (only disappointment was I thought from the pictures it would be a larger load space, but not to worry)

I have always wanted a transit, although the insurance would never seem worth it, but for some great reason my insurance has dropped greatly just before Christmas so I jumped at the chance to buy my first transit. I have always needed a bigger van, as having a small van and trailer means everything is on display. I tried a Fiat ducato but jesus they are slow, top speed 50, ugly, big lame ducks haha.

I brought this van about a few weeks ago as an upgrade from my previous Vauxhall Combo:
Image

Its more of an upgrade in the sense of space and power, not looks

Ive always found keep costs low no matter what, the combo above was £500 and also looked a great turd before I started on it, so Im hoping the transit will go the same way :D

This is how It looked in its sorry state when it arrived:

He even through me in plenty of rust for no extra cost

So my plans are so far:

-ATTACK THE RUST
-Remove all the stickering
-Fix or replace the rusty panels
-Bring the van back to its original glory
-Sticker it up in my company graphics
-Nice wheel trims
-Remove rear racking and trim the whole rear area with carpet (to protect items from damage being transported)
-Fit a decent electric winch in the rear load bay above the cabin

I will keep updating as I get a little bit further if and one is interested.
More to come..

UPDATE

So I have been doing some more small bits on the van to tidy it up.

First off, new wheel trims:

Then went onto the interior, bought a 4 way cigarette lighter socket splitter, this meant I could have my phone charger, satnav, and inverter all plugged in at once, and still have one socket left on the 4 way free, and the one under the dash on the passenger side free :D

Image

Inverter in the glove box, this has served me well many many times in every van:

Image

Next decided to tackle the rust, bought some of this from Halfrauds:

Which resulted in this:

Once this has bitten into the rust it will be ground down/sanded, filled, primer, and painted. Bought all the bits to do it, jsut waiting for my friend to get back so I can use his very large warm bus shed 8)

So while Im waiting I decided to remove the stickers from the bonnet, which revealed lots of scrapes, damaged, flaking paint.

Whilst at halfords, I noticed an array of chavvy vans parked outside with Matt black bonnets, so I thought I would join in, but with gloss.

Bonnet removed:

Bonnet painted and back on:

So thats how far I have gotten.

Cracking job on bonnet, I would connect the inverter direct to battery with chunky cables, theres not enough current to give its full potential using gigar lighter

Haha, yeah I was disappointed with the photos, the first pic of my combo van is taken with the same camera, I had a look at my camera after taking the photos today and realised the clear casing over the lens was covered in muck so it wasnt focusing properly  So next batch of photos should be loads better

Yeah that's definitely what I want to do eventually, will have a 2nd battery with a dual charge system :D

Cheers, just aiming at a bit at a time, or panel by panel, when I have the time
Dreading taking the front wings off to repair, have seen 2 new copy front wings for a mk6 in primer, £17.99 each plus postage on ebay. Cheap considering proper ford ones are like £90  Cant decide if I am going to weld and repair or buy the copies and hope they fit.

Alot of rust there mate, i thought mine was bad. I dont think the load space is too bad in the SWB semi high top, and even though mines a 75 im surprised how well it compared to old works van which was a t280 100. What year is yours?

Attacking the rust (56k beware)

Postby yorkshire.transit » Fri Feb 17, 2012 6:05 pm

UPDATE

Ok so my aim is to tidy the van up in sections, for now im concentrating on the front end first.

So today decided to tackle the rot on one of the wings. Ill give warning to anyone that has a small amount of rot on a front wing and wants to get rid of it; it is much much much easier to replace with a new panel than to fix it,........ BUT, where is the fun in that  (next time round when rot returns I will buy new panels  )

Todays main tools:
Image

Set to removing wing mirror, thankfully just bolts, not the anti-theft things :) , then removed all bolts from the wing, 3 on-top under bonnet, 1 near the door, 2 near the front bumper, and one STUPID Philips star screw on the bottom. I mean obviously this would rot, round off, and never ever come out. So grinded away.

Finally the wing came off to reveal:
Image
Image
Image
Image

Prep-ed, wire brushed, sanded and washed:
Image

KuRust treatment:

Image
Image
Image

Once dried and rust had gone black, some of this:

Image

Resulted in this:

Image

With that done, moved onto the wing, after a gentle prod turned out rust was quite bad:

Image
Image
Image

Bubbling:
Image

Even the dog thought it was sh*t  :

Image

Then the grinder packed up, and my Dremel was no where to be found, so did the best with what I had (massive old drill with a cutting ball, and a worn cutting disk no bigger than 2p sized. Didn't want to remove to much material so only took what I had to to remove the rot, which left an odd shape.

Image

Sanded down and coated with KuRust, ready to be taken down with a grinder.

Turned black:

Well this is as far as I got, so will continue in the morning and hopefully have a few pictures of the results tomorrow.

When I do the other wing I will only post a before and after as you get the drift by now from all the pictures

UPDATE

Right, been hard at work on the van, finally have access to a sheltered workshop. It is great.

Lots of pictures to bore you all to death  Will split it into sections so there is a bit of order.
This is my first time ever using filler and painting a vehicle, but looks ok for a van.

Sorry for all the pics, but its more a documentation for myself so I know when I did what.
Right that's it for today, will carry on tomorrow. Aim to have rear arch painted, passenger side, rear and roof machine polished. Then attack all the rust on drivers side.
