dying connect?

Had a problem while ago with my van, t230 90 lwb, with the engine losing power
i thought i,d cured it with a new pedal but problem is here again
this is the problem, engine suddenly loses all power, it still runs ,but on reduced power, when you turn off and restart it s ok
again until next time, ( four times today ) always when engine is getting warm from a cold start after about 4 or 5 miles, the runs ok when warmed up
when the power cuts their is like a faint muffled knocking sound but it still runs albeit on reduced power until its restarted.
had it on a diagnostic machine but nowt showing, lad said nothing would show as no dash lights are coming on
anybody any clues as to what it could be,its drivin me nuts, not to mention the poor buggers who are behind me when it happens
would i be right in sayin that the 1.8 diesel is a good strong lump, but the electics are shite?
anyone out there shed any light on this, as the experts cant seem to find owt

its a tdci,90ps done 100,000, always serviced, just had belt done allthough thats nowt to do wi problem
its on a o4 plate
its behaved itsel today, not done its usual party trick of cutting power when im just pullin out out of a side road,
gonna have to get this sorted,gettin a bit dangerous this is.

can they go in such a short space o time ?
at 105 quid a pop im gettin worried !
is there no way o testing them to see if its faulty ?

just been out and its done its party trick again after about 3 miles after a cold start, did the usual, stopped engine , started it again n all is well
until next time it does it, noticed something curious though, i noticed the temp gauge had not moved much off cold when i pulled up to stop, when i turned off and switched the ignition on again it went up to its usual halfway mark
any insights , anyone, could it be the stat or temp sensor?

just got a new sensor, havnt fitted it yet as it looks like some things gonna have to come off to get at it
ithink i bin given the one for a later model connect, does anyone know if they fit all models or does the new sensor not fit

new cht sensor fitted , defo not a five minute job, all seems well , no erratic temp gauge, no going into limp mode after 4 or 5 miles.
no lights came on for this one and no fault code was recorded
