EGR blank tips/help

Postby Connect-rick » Thu Aug 16, 2012 8:53 pm

I've had a look but can't find any specific details on how best to blank the EGR.
Has anyone made a guide?
Do you have to do anything other than just put the plate in?
What needs cleaning out?
What gains are there?
If any gains, are they backed up or just guesses?
Would any other mod compliment the blank?

I'm ordering my blank plate for my 75 tddi and wondered about all the above questions!

Also wondering this, are the improvements purely subjective?

Just spent the last half hour reading many forums and articles and my conclusion is blank the bloody thing off
Blank plate under a fiver delivered from the bay! If they're clogged up, theyre detrimental and pointless and I don't fancy regular egr cleaning, plus the intake manifold is a pain to clean apparently.

Interesting read, won't pretend I understood it all though lol
One seller on eBay is a 20 minute drive from me so I just rang him and I'm calling in tomorrow morning to pick it up!
From other things I've read I'm guessing I do need to clean the manifold out but with what and how much of a clean?!

I fitted one a couple of weeks back and so far I've noticed that it seems to pull more consistently through the revs, slightly less smoke (I've had a vantuner remap so it smoked more than before) and a 1mpg increase in fuel economy. I haven't done anything else apart from fit the plate. I will be using wynns EGR cleaner (aerosol) at some point. But as for taking the inlet off and cleaning it, it's a big job and I just haven't got the time. It's a case of having to take the exhaust manifold off to get the inlet off and it's not easy to do, bolts will be seized etc.

you're not going to gain much but it will be running on clean air instead of exhaust gasses, if u go to the trouble of taking the egr off and giving it a good clean with brake/carb cleaner that will help, then give it a blast with wynns, decat at same time won't hurt....helps turbo to spool up quicker

Just picked the blank plate up, he only charged me £3 happy enough with that

http://bit.ly/PCkOdr that's the part on eBay, it's aluminium is that right?

Where do you get the de cat pipe from g man? It's another thing I'm considering but saving up for postal remap at vantuner

I actually like the idea of knocking its guts out as its free lol
Just found a tuning place in town and after a chat about remapping I've got to start saving hard !
He's charging £200 for same outcome as vantuner with the bonus of not having my van off road while I send the ECU away

Ok so here's where I am with progress.
The engine is pretty hot so I'm leaving the bonnet up for a bit to let it cool down.
I've stripped out the intercooler hoses and pipes and cleaned them out. Took the intercooler off and cleaned the inlet and outlet.
Is it possible or safe to flush the intercooler out? if so what with?
Externally the intercooler is pretty much caked with road dirt. Is it ok to wash it through with pressure washer?
And how the chuff do you actually get to the EGR? The bolts are underneath and it looks pretty tight!! Hence why I'm leaving bonnet up to cool it down lol

I flush my intercooler through with intake/carb cleaner and then leave it to dry as the fumes are flammable and the engine doesn't half sound rough if you fit it and start it too soon, trust me I know ;)

The EGR is just two 10mm bolts I think. A short ratchet or spanner will get them easy enough. The just put the plate in and do it up. Simples.

You're a star mate!
All I need is a 10mm spanner and I'm sorted!

No problem it's what the forum is here for. Don't quote me on the 10mm size though, I think they are. When I say short spanner I mean one that's no more than about 4inches as the left one (as you face the engine) is tight to get too.
