Tony's MWB Camper Convesion

Postby tonylem » Mon Feb 18, 2013 3:07 pm

Got a start at the weekend, so thought I would start a thread and keep a photo diary of progress.

The base vehicle, a 2008 MWB high roof 140 T280

Image

First job, remove bulkhead. What a pain that was, quite a few stuck/threaded bolts that needed drilling out.

Image

With bulkhead out.

Image

Ply all stripped out, and given a clean.

Image

Batons in on floor.

Image

Insulation going in.

Image

Floor complete.

Image

Next job is to put some windows in. Think I may leave that to someone else :D

Nice, I'll keep an eye on this as I have a friend who's converting a MWB high roof too.

Honey monster, you're on :D
The blue thing is a magnetic led light that was there when i bought it.
Insulation will be with rockwool, used it in the last van and I think it is far easier getting into awkward spaces than using celotex or polystyrene.
Windows going in tomorrow :D

Windows put in today. Had briefly thought about doing them myself, but in the end bottled it and left it to the professionals.

Have you put anything on the body skin of the side walls before stuffing in the insulation???? i need to start but cant get my head around it, i was led to believe that the condensation will collect on the metal skin off the van then be soaked up by the insulation wool and start to rot the van from inside out, very nice work upto now mate keep pics coming so i can copy :D

Dave, insulation is a very much debated subject, and I don't think there is any perfect solution. I think the main problem occurs when you seal the insulation in too well with bubble wrap/aluminised foil or any other impermeable layer. Any moisture that gets in, can't get out. Our old van was done with glass fibre wool with just carpeted ply on top (which has a degree on permeability), and it was bone dry behind after over 2 years of having sopping wet and muddy mountain bikes and kit always in the back.

I see, yeah there is a lot of different ideas, i was wanting to basicaly put some strips of timber up on the roof along each box section and in the gaps bond in polystyrene boards bonded straight to the skin of the van then ply line over that, what do you recomend??? Help lol!!!

Only starting to think about the roof, but that's pretty much the next job, once I decide what vents I want and if I need any more cables up there.
Polystyrene between the roof members sounds good though.

What mm ply did you use for the roof and how did you fix the ply roof to the van.

HM, 5mm ply, screwed directly to the roof supports with flanged head self tappers through a small pilot hole.
Main roof panel was almost a full 8x4 sheet and was a bit of a bugger for me and the missus to hold up while I drilled and screwed.
