Manual to automatic conversion

Postby sim1964 » Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:23 pm

Hi all
Our Drag strip uses an early to mid 90's traansit 2.5 diesel (banana inlet engine) as a track drier using a ducted Rolls Royce Viper jet engine and as a manual it is damned hard to drive as slowly as necessary when drying the track.
We therefore wish to convert it to automatic box. What parts will we need?

You could do with a donor van really, A4LD autobox with Di bellhousing, box mounts, selector, prop and engine bay loom.

You could get around the loom by fitting a relay between the inhibitor switch on the box and starter solenoid, to stop it starting in gear. Not too hard to do, plus the reversing lights come off the same switch, bullet connectors will sort that one

Or change the diff for a "towing ratio" and fit a wide ratio gearbox
