Speedo and mileage bit not working properly.

Have just purchased a 1986 Ford Transit 190. Its actually a horse box!

But the Speedo jumps about 10 mph and clicks ocassionally. Also the mileage doesn't appear to be working!

Any ideas guys??

Welcome Aleka. It will either be a worn speedo (at the back of the speedo), or a dodgy speedo drive in the gearbox (most likely). Take the little nylon gear out of the gearbox (at the end of the sppedo cable) and take it to a spares shop (maybe not available from Ford any more). If a new speedo drive doesn't work, it will be the speedo. It will be off to the scrappie for that! Where abouts are you?

Sounds like the speedo is knacked, either due to age or I would say someone playing with it.

I think I know where you are going with this MrMp, but I don;t see the point of clocking a 20 year old transit, unless it's REALLY special and billed as a concourse model! Pic would be nice!

The MOT's verify most of the mileage. It's an intermittent fault. Could it be a loose cable somewhere?

Also how difficult is it to do a basic service? It's the 2.0 ltr petrol version.
They do only have 4 gears don't they??? Can't find a 5th if there is one!

Is this a Mk2 (square shape) or a Mk3 (wedge shape)? Most of both were 4 speed, but if she has been converted to or has 5 speed from original (unlikely, as you can only find 4 gears!), the speedo drive could be off (with a conversion). As Mr MMp says, it sounds like a worn speedo, in which case look for a second hand one.

yes try the one going into the back of the speedo - right in the centre should just push forward - may have just come out and only be touching a bit!!!

Fingers crossed that's it is a loose cable then.

The transit was a bit slow the first bit of the journey home and idled fine. (It had been stood for a while)
However after we gave it a good blast it ran better and the power went up on it. However on the drive when we got it home(drive is on a slope) it was idling ok but nearly stalling you could save it with a quick blip on the accelerator.
Could this be because we've stirred up all the bits, dirt etc in the tank??

if its been stood for a while it should get better with some use - your (very small) problem is most likely to be carb related i wouldnt worry too much about dirt in the tank - just dont let it run very low on petrol!! if you still have the probs give the engine a good service before doing anything serious!!
and you can turn the tickover up if it keeps cutting out!

It's a Mk3 then! Must be really early. Try getting some carb cleaner from a spares and accessories shop, and give it shot. It might clear the jets.

If you are local to me I have a speedo you can have!

Servicing doesnt come easier than a Pinto engine, so you shouldnt have too many probs.
